Chronic Pain & Migraines
Chronic pain and migraines can feel miserable.
Living with chronic pain can be both physically and emotionally excruciating. Millions of individuals are living with chronic pain and struggling to find relief, unaware that healing can come from psychotherapy. Some of the most common forms of chronic pain are irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, neck pain and back pain or sciatica.
My Approach
There is a great deal of research indicating that a significant amount of chronic pain is due to psychological rather than physical/structural problems. Maybe you, like most, have spent a great deal of time and money visiting physicians and seeking diagnoses only to be told “we didn’t find anything wrong.” Sometimes, even with a physical problem or accident, the pain is much worse than doctors believe it should be. It is not “all in your head!” The pain is very real, but could be due to painful psychological emotions rather than physical reasons.
Dr. John Sarno created the diagnosis tension myositis syndrome “TMS'' to account for the countless individuals who experience chronic pain and find healing through emotional processing. I have seen individuals experience anywhere from reduced pain to complete healing. This includes going from regular migraines to rarely, if ever, having another migraine.
My approach to chronic pain involves a combination of helping clients with emotional processing and integrating body-based interventions. This simply means helping people build awareness of their bodies and the ability to heal their pain.
If you are interested in learning more, I recommend the following books by Dr. John Sarno: Healing Back Pain and The MindBody Prescription. I also recommend consulting with a physician familiar with TMS to determine if taking a psychological approach to your chronic pain is the best path forward.
